A boarding ladder has one job — getting a person out of the water or off a dock onto the boat — and three things decide whether it does that job well: how it is mounted, how many steps it has, and whether it stays put under a wet, moving load.
- Telescopic ladder — collapses to a compact package and extends when needed. The usual choice where stowage space is tight.
- Folding ladder — hinged, folds flat against a transom or swim platform. The common choice for swim platforms and permanent installation.
- Swim ladder — a permanently mounted ladder, often angled, with wider treads and a handrail; made for climbing out of the water.
- Hidden-box or under-platform ladder — stores inside a recess in the platform or transom, so nothing is left standing on deck.
- Mounting type matters more than looks. A transom bracket, an under-platform mount and a hook-on rail ladder behave very differently once someone is climbing.

1. What a Boarding Ladder Actually Has to Do
The load on a boarding ladder is not the same as the load on a fixed ladder. Someone climbs up wet, from a moving dinghy or from the water, often with one hand holding something, and they land their whole weight on the bottom tread as they step on. That is a dynamic load, applied off-centre, on a fitting that is bolted to a surface which may be thin.
Three practical consequences follow from that:
- The mounting decides the real capacity. The same ladder bolted to a solid transom with a backing plate and to a thin panel with four screws behaves completely differently.
- The ladder needs a standoff. Treads have to sit far enough off the hull that a foot fits on them, and the ladder should not foul the hull, the outboard or a transducer as it is deployed.
- Handholds matter as much as steps. Most people getting out of the water pull more than they step; a handrail, or a grab point at the right height, makes the difference between a ladder that works for everyone on board and one that only works for the athletic.
For anything used commercially — pilot ladders, embarkation ladders on working vessels — the design is regulated and selected differently. A recreational boarding ladder is chosen on fit, mounting and duty: how high the boarding point is above the water, who will use it, and whether it is used at the dock or from the water.
2. Telescopic Ladders: Compact When Stowed
A telescopic ladder extends rung by rung and collapses into a short package. It suits small boats, tenders and inflatables where a permanently mounted ladder would be in the way, and where stowage space is measured in centimetres.
What the specification tells you: the number of steps, the extended length, the overall width and the distance between the rails. A two-step telescoping ladder around 870 mm long, and a three-step version around 1,150 mm long and 440 mm wide, are the usual sizes in this class — a telescoping ladder with a handrail is representative. Two points to check before ordering:
- Extended length against your boarding height. Measure from the mounting surface to the waterline in the loaded condition — fuel, water, people — not at the dock on an empty boat.
- How the extension locks. A ladder that can collapse under load is the classic failure of cheap telescopic designs. Look for a positive lock at each position and a standoff that keeps the extended section clear of the hull.
3. Folding Ladders: Permanent, Flat and Immediate
A folding ladder is hinged, so it folds flat against a transom or swim platform when not in use and swings down when needed. It is the standard answer for a swim platform, where the boarding point is permanent, so the ladder is on hand rather than fetched out of a locker.
Because it is used in a hurry and in the wet, the details that matter are the pivot, the catch and the treads:
- Pivot and lock: check that the hinge action is firm, and that the ladder is held positively when deployed and when stowed — a ladder that swings back while someone is climbing it is a hazard.
- Folded thickness: this decides how much it protrudes from the transom and whether it interferes with mooring lines or the tender.
- Treads: wider, flat treads are far more comfortable than round rungs for bare feet. A three-step folding swim ladder around 890 mm long and 368 mm wide is a typical compact unit for a small boat or a platform edge.
4. Swim Ladders: Made for Getting Out of the Water
A swim ladder is designed around one task: a person in the water, climbing. Compared with a boarding ladder used at the dock, it usually has an angled profile that puts the lower treads well below the surface, more comfortable treads, and a handrail above the platform.
Ask three questions when specifying one:
- How deep do the lower treads sit when deployed? If the shallowest underwater tread is a long way down, the ladder is hard to start climbing.
- Is the handrail at a useful height? It should be reachable from the water, not only from the deck.
- Does the ladder fold or retract when underway? Anything permanently below the waterline adds drag and risk; a folding or telescoping section is normal for a planing boat.
A four-step under-platform ladder with a handrail is a good example of the type for a boat with a platform and a modest freeboard. Ladder step lighting is also worth considering where boarding happens at night: LED step lights for boat ladders mark the treads on dark evenings.
5. Mounting Methods: Where Most Ladder Problems Start
Every ladder problem we hear about comes back to the mounting rather than the ladder. There are four common approaches:
- Transom bracket. The ladder folds or hangs from a bracket bolted to the transom. Strong when there is solid structure behind the fasteners; the bracket geometry sets how the ladder sits.
- Under-platform mount. The ladder fixes under a swim platform and folds down from there. Keeps the deck clear and puts the ladder exactly where people swim; needs a platform with enough structure to carry the load.
- Hidden-box or recessed mount. The ladder stows inside a recess in the transom or platform, so nothing is left standing when it is up — a hidden-box stern mount ladder is the compact version of this. Check the recess drains, and that the ladder is retained positively when stowed.
- Hook-on or rail-mounted ladder. For tenders and inflatables without a transom bracket, a ladder that hooks over the tube or a rail is the usual solution. It has to be positioned so the load goes into a strong part of the tube or deck, and it should not be left in place while underway.
Whatever the method, two rules apply. Use a backing plate wherever the surface is thin or cored, and bed the fasteners so water cannot track into the core. The ladder is a high-load fitting, and its fasteners are the part that fails first.
6. The Parameters Worth Comparing
When you compare two ladders, these are the numbers that decide whether it will suit the boat:
- Steps. Count them, then check the spacing between them. A short ladder with well-spaced steps is easier to climb than a tall one with cramped spacing — and for swimming, the lowest tread should be deep enough to reach from the water.
- Lengths. Ask for both the stowed length and the deployed length. The stowed figure is what has to fit in the locker or recess; the deployed figure decides whether the ladder reaches the water.
- Load capacity. This is the parameter buyers ask about most and the one least often published on a product page. Treat a static rating as a starting point rather than an answer: someone stepping up wet lands on the bottom tread with their full weight plus movement, so the mounting, the handrail and the tread construction carry as much of the load as the rails do. Ask for the rated load of the specific model you are considering, and match it to the heaviest realistic use — including someone boarding with gear on.
- Installation method. Transom bracket, under-platform, recessed box or hook-on. This drives the fastener pattern, the backing plate and the sealing.
- Folding design. Folding, telescoping, or folding *and* telescoping. Two-stage designs stow smaller but have more joints, so the locks and pivots deserve a look.
- Width and standoff. Wide enough for a foot in a deck shoe, and standing off the hull so treads are usable.
- Material and finish. 316 stainless steel for anything that lives on a transom or below the waterline; mirror polishing and teak treads are the usual finishes, and a teak-tread boarding ladder adds comfort on bare feet.

Two rules carry across every boat type. Size the ladder against the boarding height in the loaded condition, and do not rely on a ladder that is held only by its own weight while it is in use.

1. The ladder is rarely the weak point — the mounting is
Loose ladders, cracked transoms and gelcoat stars around the fastener holes are the usual complaints, and they come from a ladder fitted to a surface that was not built to take a boarding load. A backing plate, larger fasteners or a through-bolted bracket solves more of these cases than a heavier ladder does. If you cannot get to the back of the panel, that is worth knowing before the ladder is ordered, not after.
2. Buy the length for the loaded boat
Most ladder sizing arguments come from a measurement taken at the dock with an empty boat. Fuel, water, a full cooler and a couple of people on the same side can put the waterline several centimetres higher. Measure the mounting point to the waterline with the boat loaded, and add a margin so the lowest tread stays usable.
3. Comfort decides which ladder actually gets used
A ladder with narrow round rungs, no standoff and no handhold gets used once and then avoided. Wider treads, a proper handrail and, on the swim ladder, an angled profile are the features people notice when they climb out wet with one hand full.

Before ordering a boarding ladder, confirm:
- Boarding height: mounting point to waterline, measured with the boat loaded
- Steps and spacing: enough treads to climb comfortably, with usable spacing
- Stowed and deployed length: one has to fit the locker or recess, the other has to reach the water
- Rated load: ask for the figure for the specific model, and match it to the heaviest realistic use
- Mounting type: transom bracket, under-platform, recessed box, or hook-on
- Structure behind the fasteners: solid laminate, cored panel, or a thin transom that needs a backing plate
- Handhold: a handrail, or a reachable grab point at the right height
- Deployment and stowage: positive lock when down, positive retention when up, drainage for a recess
- Material and finish: 316 stainless steel for transom and underwater use; mirror polish or teak treads for comfort
- Clearances: hull, outboard, transducers, mooring lines and the tender
- Serviceability: can the pivots be rinsed and lubricated, and the treads replaced?

- the ladder is used occasionally and kept out of the way the rest of the time
- you are fitting an inflatable, tender or small outboard boat

Choose a swim ladder with a handrail if:
- swimming and getting out of the water is a regular activity
- several people, or guests, will use it

Choose a teak-tread boarding ladder if:
- you board over the side, or from a dock, rather than from the water
