1. What Makes a Hinge a Marine Hinge
A hinge on a boat lives in conditions that indoor hardware is not built for. It gets salt spray on every trip, washdown at the dock, and weeks of humid air inside a locker. It opens and closes far more often than a kitchen cabinet, and it does so while the boat is moving — a lid that slams in a chop puts a shock load through the hinge and through the screws holding it.
That environment is what separates a marine hinge from a general-purpose one:
- Corrosion is the first difference. Bright-plated steel hinges look acceptable in the shop. Once the plating is scratched or cut at an edge, the steel underneath starts to rust, and the rust bleeds onto the panel around it.
- Section and fasteners are the second. Thin leaves and small screws may hold a domestic door, but they put fewer threads into a hatch frame, so the panel starts to sag long before the hinge itself fails.
- The pivot is the third. A hinge is a moving part. An open pin, a bare steel spring, or a pivot with no clearance for salt will stiffen, wear, and eventually drop the door.
- Clearance is the fourth. Marine lids usually sit on a gasket or over a coaming. A hinge that offers no offset or adjustment will bind against the seal, and the panel stops closing cleanly.
A marine hinge is therefore a combination of four things: the right alloy, enough metal in the right places, a pivot that tolerates salt, and a finish that can be rinsed and cleaned.
2. Materials: Why 316 Stainless Steel Is the Default Choice
Most marine hinges are made from stainless steel, and grade 316 is the common specification for anything exposed to saltwater. Grade 316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to the chloride pitting that salt spray encourages. Grade 304 is a reasonable choice for interior joinery or freshwater use, but on deck and in wet lockers, 316 is the safer specification. Where a component is welded, the low-carbon version, 316L, is often specified to reduce the risk of corrosion around the weld.
Two other material decisions matter as much as the grade:
- Cast or formed. Cast hinges give a thicker section and a more detailed shape, which suits doors and hatches that carry weight and hardware that needs to look right on a visible surface. Formed and stamped hinges are thinner and lighter, and suit light panels where weight matters more than stiffness.
- Pin and knuckle. Check how the pin is retained and whether it is stainless. Peened and staked pins stay in place; removable pins make sense where the panel has to come off for servicing. A pivot with clean clearance for water is easier to keep free than a tight, hidden joint.
Finish follows the same logic. A mirror-polished hinge is easy to rinse and leaves little for salt to sit on, which is why it is the usual finish for visible deck hardware. Satin and brushed finishes hide handling marks better, and a black-coated hinge is useful in a cockpit where glare is a problem — but check that the coating is applied over stainless and that cut edges are not left bare.

A butt hinge is the familiar two-leaf hinge with a central knuckle — the hinge most people picture when they think of a door. On a boat it is used on cabinet doors, locker doors, interior doors, and light hatch lids.
It is the most flexible type because it can be mounted almost anywhere: on the face of a panel, recessed into the edge, or on the inside face of a locker door. Two hinges usually carry a light door; a heavier cabin door may take three so that the load is shared and the door does not twist.
Two points matter when ordering. First, the leaf size and thickness have to suit the panel — a small 70 × 40 mm hinge is fine for a galley cabinet, while a cabin door needs a wider leaf and a larger knuckle. Second, on replacement work, the screw-hole pattern decides whether a hinge drops into the old holes or the panel needs to be re-drilled. 4. Piano (Continuous) Hinge: Load Spread Along the Full Length
A piano hinge, also called a continuous hinge, runs the whole length of the lid rather than sitting at two corners. Because it is fastened along its entire length, the load is shared by many screws instead of a few, which is why continuous hinges are the usual choice for long lids on lazarettes, bench seats, bait boards, and engine boxes.
The advantage is not only strength. A continuous hinge also keeps a long lid straight: with two hinges only, a wide lid tends to flex in the middle and the corners lift as the panel warps. A full-length hinge holds the whole edge at a consistent height.
When specifying one, the useful measurements are the overall length, the screw spacing along the leaf, and the pin diameter. Length should follow the lid, and screw spacing should suit the frame material — close spacing on a thin panel risks a row of closely spaced holes. Continuous hinges are supplied in stainless steel, and the same 316/304 logic applies: 316 for exposed deck lids, 304 where the lid sits in a protected or freshwater position.
5. Strap Hinge: For Heavy Lids and Real Weight
A strap hinge looks like a narrow bar with screw holes along it, and it earns its place where a small leaf would simply be overloaded. The long leaf spreads the fasteners over a wide distance, which reduces the leverage on each screw and keeps a heavy lid from working loose.
Typical uses are heavy deck hatches, transom and bulkhead doors, storage boxes on the dock, and any panel that is opened by hand and then left standing open. A heavy-duty 316 stainless steel strap hinge at around 170 × 18 mm and 4.5 mm thick is representative of this class of hardware.
Two practical notes. Strap hinges often need a bearing or washer arrangement so that the two leaves do not bind against each other as the lid opens. And because the screws are spread over a long distance, the frame — not the hinge — becomes the limiting factor: check that there is solid material behind every screw position, and back the fasteners where you can.
6. Offset Hinge: When the Lid and Frame Are Not on the Same Plane
An offset hinge, sometimes called a cranked hinge, has its two leaves set at a step rather than flat in line. The step lets a door or lid move past a lip, a frame edge, or a gasket instead of colliding with it.
This is the type that solves the problems that a flat butt hinge cannot:
- a hatch lid that sits on top of a coaming and has to clear the raised edge as it swings
- a locker door that closes against a rubber seal and needs a few millimetres of room
- a panel that sits proud of its frame, where the hinge line is not flush with either surface
On boats, the same idea appears in angled deck hardware: hinges that turn a corner or hold a tube at a defined angle. A 90-degree deck hinge with a removable pin is a common example, often used for bimini frames and rails that need to fold down or come off.
When specifying an offset hinge, the critical number is the offset itself — the distance between the two mounting planes. Measure the lip or the gasket compression you need to clear, not just the leaf size.
7. Related Types Worth Knowing
Some hinges do a specific job so well that they are worth knowing even if the type is not in the catalogue you are reading:
- Friction hinges hold a hatch or locker lid in the position you leave it, so the lid does not fall shut on your hands. They are a practical alternative to gas struts on small panels, and a flush mount friction hinge that opens to about 95 degrees is a good example of the type.
- Removable-pin hinges let a panel come off without unscrewing the hinge, which is useful for bimini frames, tables, and anything stowed away while running.
- Folding and flip hinges open through a wide arc and are used for seat backs, folding tables, and hinged covers that need to lie flat when open. A 180-degree casting hinge covers that role.
8. Matching the Hinge to the Application
The same hinge type can be right in one position and wrong in another. In practice, the location on the boat makes the decision clearer than the part number does.

Two general rules help across all four positions. The first is to size the hinge by the panel, not by the hole it is replacing — a heavier lid needs more leaf, more screws, or more hinges. The second is to treat the hinge and the latch as one system: a latch that pulls the door tight against a gasket also loads the hinge, and a hinge that holds the door square keeps the latch lined up. When one of the two is undersized, the other usually shows the wear.

1. Grade and finish decide how the hinge looks in year three, not in month one
A stainless hinge that is rinsed and occasionally cleaned stays bright; salt left sitting on hardware in a damp locker shows up as surface discoloration, and crevices around a knuckle or under a washer are the first places to look. On coated hinges, an edge left bare will be the first point to discolour — worth checking on the drawing before a bulk order.
2. Match the replacement, not only the size
Most hinge returns we see come from one of four mismatches: a different screw-hole spacing, a different offset, a thinner leaf than the original, or a fixed pin where the old hinge had a removable one. Photograph the old hinge beside a ruler, or send a drawing, and the replacement can be confirmed before the order is placed.
3. Hinges and latches fail together
A door that has started to sag puts its latch out of line, and a latch that has to be forced is usually a sign that the hinge has loosened or worn. On heavier lids, adding a hinge, spreading the fasteners, or fitting a stay-open hinge solves the problem at the source instead of compensating with a stronger latch.
